How do I properly clean and store vintage cotton clothing?
fabric is swiss batiste and I need to create long term storage that is safe for this delicate fabric
First be sure that it is very clean and well rinsed of all residue, no starch or any other treatment that could attract insects or deteriorate the fabric. Any substance left on the fabric now could turn spots dark in time even if it is not noticeable now.
Make sure it is completely dry. Use acid free tissue paper to fill out the sleeves and skirts to avoid having any folding creases that can harm the fibers. The best packaging would be a container that would allow the fabric to breathe (not plastic)while still keeping out feeding or nesting insects. Pack each garment in a separate box carefully in layers of acid free tissue avoiding creasing the fabric as much as possible. If it is a particularly valuable item, it can be taken to a quality dry cleaner who offers a "heirlooming" service where they can do this for you.
