Shelf Clock
Shelf Clock

Why does my shelf stereo system display not keep showing the time when you turn it off?
The instruction manual says that when you turn off the stereo (standby), the clock is displayed for a few seconds and then it will disappear. The display will be blank. Why are new stereo systems being made this way? On the old stereo systems from 5 to 10 years ago, the clock always remained visible on the LED display when turned off. (My brother's JVC stereo system is a good example. The time stays visible permanently in standby.) I hate it! I want to see the time! I don't like having to press the clock button just to see it pop up for a few seconds then go off. Stupid Panasonic.
Dear The Tramp™
The answer to your question: WHY manufacturers have eliminated the “ALWAYS ON” displays, is because they are striving to MINIMIZE the standby electric power consumption, of their equipment.
They all want to conform to the new “ENERGY STAR” specifications. ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy.
Having the display always on, consumes energy, (although only a small amount.) But they make a rather impressive claim for their efforts:
.
“Results are already adding up. Americans, with the help of ENERGY STAR, saved enough energy in 2007 alone to avoid greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those from 27 million cars — all while saving $16 billion on their utility bills.”

I understand your annoyance at this loss of convenience, but I think these changes, in appliance efficiency standards, are here to stay. The ever increasing worldwide energy demand is not likely to subside.
Here is a link to a Wiki article on “Standby Power” which describes how some appliances waste energy.

BTW, I really like your Avatar. Do you have a LADY™ ?
