Large Deer

Why do the deer here (whitetails) join up into a large herd when winter snow sets in?

protection, warmth and they all want to be in the same area anyways.
more eyes = better chance of spotting a predator before they attack
also, they're looking for food in the same areas, so they bunch up, also, it's warmer to be in a group, even being 2 feet away from another living body is better then nothing, ever walk into a herd of cattle on a cold day? it's surprising how much heat they give off.
