Why did Bush mistakenly say Nelson Mandela was dead - a verbal gaffe, or merely wishful thinking?

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Nelson Mandela is still very much alive despite an embarrassing gaffe by U.S. President George W. Bush, who alluded to the former South African leader's death in an attempt to explain sectarian violence in Iraq.

Notice how the media declares this an "embarrassing gaffe" as if no other possibility could account for this mistake? Couldn't it also be a Freudian slip or wishful thinking upon the President's part? After all, Nelson Mandela was a dirty lousy communist:

Mandela belongs back in a jail cell. The media paints his as some kind of savior. Disgusting!

Nelson and Winnie are nothing less than terrorists. Ask them about their special 'tire necklace' eh? Nobel Peace Prize my arse....

Who gives a frick what Bush said....those two outta be rotting in prison. Canada had it right, they forbade Winnie from entering their country.
