Why do you wind a clock?

I can't find anywhere a reason for WHY to wind a clock, only how to. What's the purpose of winding a clock? Does a clock start incorrectly telling time and winding moves the minute hand accurately? What's the purpose and how does it work? Also, what does it mean to wind a watch? Do you still have to wind watches? I never wind my watch.

Because a mechanical clock won't work if you don't.

As the second guy said, clocks originally used a spring as a power source (back before batteries were invented, or before anyone knew about electricity). The power source for a mechanical clock is YOU, and winding the clock coils the spring into a tight ball. As the spring gradually uncoils ("unwinds"), it drives the gears of the clock.

Now a days, some manufacturers still make mechanical clocks for people who want to be "green", or for people who just like mechanical clocks.

As for winding a watch, my grandfather's watch needs winding.
