How do you remove the instrument cluster out of the dash of a 1979 240d?
I need to remove the instrument cluster (speedometer, oil pressure, clock etc.) out of the dashboard of a 1979 MBZ 240d. Do you just pry it out or do you need to go behind it and loosen some screws or something??
The first thing you need to do is drop the panel under the dash. As I recall, there are a few screws that hold it in. You can just undo the front and bend it down. Then reach up behind the dash and undo the speedometer cable. Push the pod out gently from behind, it won't go too far. At this point, you will have enough clearance to undo the oil pressure capillary and the electrical connections. When you are sure everything is disconnected, you can gently remove the pod.
When you reinstall, it's basically the reverse. The one thing you have to be very careful about is to properly install the oil pressure capillary. If you leave this loose or cross thread it, thick black engine oil will be spraying out under the dash.
