Clock Hand
Clock Hand

How can a clock (analog) have a 'second hand' that ticks and rotates normally yet the clock never changes time
The clock reads ten past six although the battery is fine and the 'seconds' hand moves around the clock face normally.
The battery operates a small motor directly linked to the "second" hand. This in turn is liked by gears to the minute and hour hand.
Modern battery driven clocks have tiny, nylon gears set into plastic brushings. This is far less durable than something like an old pocket watch which had steel gears set into brushings which were actually made of synthetic rubies. This was called a "jewled movement" and really expensive wristwatches are judged according to the number of jewles they have.
The plastic brushings wear out within 5 years and this causes the gears to fail to mesh. The second hand is closest to the motor gear, so it is usually the last hand to fail. A good pocket watch can last a lifetime.
