appying gold leaf to an antique mirror?
I HAVE PURCHASED AN ANTIQUE MIRROR THAT HAS A WOODEN FRAME. I WOULD LIKE TO APPLY GOLD LEAF TO IT, BUT NOT EVERYWHERE...SOMEWHAT SHABBY CHIC LOOKING. WHAT BRAND OF GOLD LEAF SHOULD I USE AND HOW SHOULD I GO ABOUT DOING IT?
There aren't many brands. I just pick up the real gold leaf (don't use the imitation, it tarnishes) from my local art supply store. You'll also need to pick up a product called sizing which acts as the glue for the leaf. Any attempt to leaf on your own will give a shabby chic finish because leafing requires several built up layers to get a perfect finish. By only doing the first layer or 2, you'll have a great finish. When you're done, you can protect it with a coat of varnish to keep it from rubbing off too easily or scratching. The only other tool you'd need would be a beaver art brush to put it in place and burnish it to get it to adhere well.
